The Story of Underdog BBQ
At its heart, Underdog BBQ is more than just a barbecue joint – it’s a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of community. Nestled in the vibrant city of Erie, Pennsylvania, Underdog BBQ began its journey not just as a restaurant, but as a bold experiment in entrepreneurship.
The story started when Underdog BBQ was featured on Season 1 of "Undercover Billionaire," a reality TV series that aired on Discovery Channel in 2019. The show followed entrepreneur Glenn Stearns, who arrived in Erie with just $100, a truck, and a challenge to build a business worth a million dollars in 90 days. Choosing Erie as the backdrop for his ambitious endeavor, Glenn quickly recognized the city’s underdog spirit and saw an opportunity to create something meaningful.
With no previous ties to the area, Glenn embedded himself in the Erie community and built Underdog BBQ from the ground up, alongside a team of passionate locals. The concept was clear: craft a barbecue restaurant that not only served incredible smoked meats but also embodied the tenacity and grit that defines Erie’s hardworking residents.
In 2021, Glenn Stearns passed the torch to Chef Ashley Messenger, selling the restaurant for just $100 as a symbolic gesture to keep the underdog spirit alive. With a passion for great food and a vision for community-focused dining, Chef Ashley has carried the restaurant forward while preserving its legacy. Her culinary expertise and dedication to quality have ensured that Underdog BBQ remains a staple in Erie’s food scene.
Today, Underdog BBQ stands as a thriving business and a beloved part of Erie’s culture. It’s a gathering place for families, friends, and visitors who come not just for the delicious food but for the story of perseverance and community that’s written into every bite.
